Audio Systems: Radio static, radio chassis, wire pairs

Question
I have resurrected a 1940 Motorola Model 550 radio for my old car.  It plays well, except for the static through the speaker.  What are some things I could do to correct this?

Answer
Hi Chuck,
Well things have moved on a touch since then, thank heavens, in days gone by one spent most of the workshop time not installing radios but trying to cure such problems, and they were many and varied.
Good earth on everything.
Extra earth on radio chassis to ground, NOT the earth wire to the radio.
Inline choke on the live feed helps as does a filter, used to be sold in a set.
Make sure the antenna is well earthed and the co-axe is sound as is the plug.
Twisting the speaker wire pairs helps too.
Apart from that make sure it is a solid install and there are no stray emissions from the engine such as leaky HT leads, etc.
Good luck,
Peter
