Audio Systems: stereo system, component stereo system, consumer electronic products

Question
I have a JVC UX-N1W Micro Cd/Mp3 component stereo system that i just bought offline. When i press the power button, it reads 'hello' and then turns off after a couple seconds. How could i fix this?

Answer
First, I don't recommend you buy consumer electronic products online (Unless it is a highly reputable firm that gives return privileges) as in many, many cases it is defective merchandise and you get stuck with it.

ONE: Try a hard reset; do this by unplugging the power cord for 1/2 hour; then try it again.

TWO:  Disconnect the speaker systems from the back of the central unit and try; does it stay on with them removed? If so, try just one speaker then the other. This will tell you if you have one amplifier dead or both of them.

THREE:  If the unit is new and still under warranty you should get it into a jvc warranty center right away.  If it is NOT under warranty  you will likely find the cost of repair is equal or more than the price of this unit (around $99 new; $49 refurbed).

I wish there was better news to give you; I like JVC products and they are a fine, reputable company, but about 1% of new products will be defective from the store.  For refurbished units the percentage is much, much higher.

Let me know the outcome and if you need further guidance, please let me  know.

PS: If you do take it to a shop for repair they will find either a bad power supply or blown audio amplifiers; cost of repair is about a 2 week wait for parts and $75 to $125 - my guess.
