Audio Systems: car amp, master volume control, radio shack store

Question
i am trying to relocate the gain knob for my amp in my car....i want it mounted somewhere in my dash so i can turn it up or down as i please....ive seen it be done but i lost contact with the person i know who does it...is there anyway you would be able to tell me how to do it?

Answer
There are add-on volume controls you can buy; or you can make them yourself.

There are wireless ones, remote control ones and just about any configuration you can think of.  Many add-on equalizers have volume controls on the front panel; depending on your car they can mount underneath the main head unit.

If you are using rca outs to rca ins on the amp you can just run it through a volume control mounted under the dash at your convenience.  If this appeals to you, let me know and I can explain how to do it - or you can go to a Radio Shack store or other parts store and get a dual 10k audio taper pot and connect it up (for stereo).  If your amp is four channel you may need two dual pots.  They are only a few dollars each.  So, for around $5 to $10 you can have gain control.

The Kenwood equalizer (above) is fun because it not only has a master volume control but allows you to adjust the sound quality in much greater detail than the regular tone controls on most head units.  If you have enough amp power and good subwoofers you can get some sensational sound improvements this way.

So, let me know if you need further guidance.
