Answer
Whenever purchasing a used car, check out everything in the car from bumper to bumper; operate all the swicthes, lights, radio, cd, tape, air conditioning, headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, brakes, dipstick, radiator, everything you can think of...... even if it is a car dealer who has promised that everything works.  End of lecture!

There are many possibilities for this; but essentially what it means is the cd player cannot read the digital data on the disc.  The most common cause is a weak or dying laser diode that resides inside the optical pickup assembly.  You can try cleaning it off, but I don't give it much chance of solving your problem.  Clean the lense by reaching in with a cotton q_tip and flicking off the lense with several quick strokes.  This will dislodge the microscopic particles that may be attached to it and causing the laser beam to go out of focus.   Worth a try.

If the lense cleaning doesn't seem to help you will need service on the unit; and it will be expensive.  Therefore, you might weigh the cost  of repair against the cost of a newplayer before deciding what to do.
