Audio Systems: speakers not working, alpine cda 9813, nissan sentra

Question
OK, this is going to be long...  I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V and I am trying to install an Alpine CDA 9813.  The head unit works fine in a 1996 Nissan Altima.  The factory head unit in the sentra works with the passenger side speakers only.  When I connect the Alpine to the Sentra the power will come on but no sound comes out of the speakers.  I tried unhooking the amplifier for the stock subwoofer but nothing.  I have turned up the sound and tried the fader and balance.  I have connected the proper connectors and the antenna hookup but nothing.  I have connected the ground wire as well to the body of the car and that does not solve the problem.  Please help!!  I don't know what else to try!  I am extremely frustrated.

Answer
Car systems are real frustrating.  I know.

About 50% of the time it is related to improper wiring. Other times it is defective gear.

The best way to troubleshoot such problems is to bring the head unit out and bench test it independent of the vehicle.  To do this, remove the unit and power it with some long wires coming directly from the battery.  Hook up a stand alone speaker to each amplifier output to verify the unit is working  properly when it is not in the car.

If the unit is defective that is a problem for repair considerations - or replacement if the dealer will take the set back.

If the set works fine outside the car then you have car problems.  You must get a meter and check the 12v lines and connections to the head unit and amps.  Test all the speaker lines with an ohm meter and label them so you are dead certain they are connected to your amp outputs correctly.  You cannot be too sure; but you must be.

Look at these pictures as a guide to check the wiring scheme for the Sentra:

This is for an older Sentra, but I think the wiring schema is the same.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Meantime, hope this helps.
