Audio Systems: Speakers., watt speakers, btsc

Question
I am getting a new tv with a 10 watt speaker on each side.Is this adequate? It also has Surround Sound MTS.Is this good? What does MTS mean? Thanks!

Answer
MTS, BTSC, "Surround SOund" - these are effectively marketing tags to entice you to purchase.

If you only have two speakers, you can only play back stereo, but the good news is that your TV is some-what "future-proof": as broadcast audio and video standards get more complex in the years to come (with High-Definition, DVDs, Etc) your TV will still be able to decode the audio signal and give you something to hear.

I'm sorry to say, however, that this is not technically surround sound.

While we're speaking technically, "10-watts" is only a measurement of power - how loud a speaker can get - and not quality.  Still, two 10-watt speakers will be plenty loud enough for you to clearly hear the TV.  It may not reproduce the movie-theater experience in your living room, but you'll know what's being said come game-time or during the 10 O'clock news.

If you would like a better audio experience, I might suggest looking into "Home theater in a box" solutions as the next level up.  Onkyo has scored fairly high on Consumer Reports, there's no need to throw money away on a Bose lifestyle type system.

As for "MTS", I do mostly aggree with this definition:

Good luck, and enjoy that new TV!
