Audio Systems: CD Player in 1999 Toyota Avalon, toyota avalon, jbl system

Question
Cleggsan,
I have a 1999 Toyota Avalon with a factory installed stero that includes a CD Player.  We bought it used.  When we put a CD in the CD player it just kicks it right back out.  What do you think might be wrong?  What do you think would be a resonable amount to pay to have it fixed?
Thanks so much,
Cheryl

Answer
The Avalon is a great car.

But, the entertainment unit is now 7 years old.  They don't last so long.

I would not repair it - unless it is the JBL system (which you didn't say it was, so I will assume it is not).

The cd player fault condition could be any of several possibilities.  The problem is that pulling the unit and getting inside to find out the trouble is very expensive in time and labor - for any shop.  The cost of repair may be as great or greater than buying a new unit.

If this unit has a stereo input (many of them do) you could plug in an mp3 or iPod into it and have a better system anyway.

If not, I suggest you just replace the unit with another one that is compatible with your vehicle. You can find out easily by going to

www.crutchfield.com

and check their list of fitting units and wiring harnesses.

Find one that has either cd and/or iPod or mp3 inputs and you will be on your way.  I think you can find units for under $100 for the lower end; around $200 to $300 for the better units.  All depends on how much you are willing to pay for your sound!

PS: Many install/repair shops will give you a quick  through the window guesstimate of what needs done and rough cost, so if you have one in the neighborhood, ask them to give it a look.
