Audio Systems: Surround Sound Problem, hitachi projection tv, optical fiber cable

Question
I aksed this question of another gentleman and he gave me the answer that follows - I wanted to ask hima follow up question but hes on vactation. My follow up question is : I understand that the programing might not contain surround sound ifno - but I dont get any sound thru the speakers at all from the TV- But do when a movie is played in the DVD player. Would this be normal that I not get any sound thru the surround system at all from the TV?

Thank You very much

Question -
My friend just bought a 51" Hitachi Projection TV -- I have been trying to hook a Kenwood Sound System to it but not having any luck - I can get the surround sound to work with the DVD player but nothing with the TV ---I tried RCA cables, Optical Fiber cable --- I used to be decent doing these kind of hookups but apparently don't know what I am doing here. What am I doing wrong?

Thank You very much for your time

Answer -
It may not be any fault of your own.

That may be because none of the programming you're watching contains actual surround-sound information, so what you're decoding is only the stereo information.  This is especially true if you're simply using analog Cable TV directly from the wall straight into your TV.  There's just not enough bandwidth in there for anything more than NTSC stereo on most channels (some are even crunched down to mono).

I might also suggest poking through previous folk's questions on this or other sites - you're not alone!

By the way, in my experience your friend's 51" Projection TV should provide him or her with many more years of quality imaging compared to a Plasma.  Enjoy!

Answer
I was soooo tempted to pass on this one as I am an auto stereo expert not domestic, BUT!
I do happen to have a Samsung 47" projector myself with all the goodies under it so I can shed a bit of extra light in your corner.

If your unit is anything like my Samsung home cinema unit (HCU) then it is a radio receiver, multi format CD, DVD, etc player and is also an amplifier for all the other inputs such TV, VCR, Sat receiver, VCR, SAT and HCU should be connected to the TV input via SCART leads, as I am sure you know.

The TV, VCR and SAT should all have RCA audio outs (red and white) and the HCU has pairs of RCA inputs for these items, usually (and on mine), TV, VCR, SAT, Aux (hi-fi).

You then select the correct item on the HCU (mode) in order for that units input to be heard on the surround sound but you will only get out what you put in so if, for instance, your TV has Dolby and the programme you are watching is in mono then that’s what you will get out of your Dolby HCU, the same on all 5 (or 6) speakers.
You can also watch TV but hear the VCR or SAT if you have the wrong mode set on the HCU as it will be outputting that units sound and not the TVs. The HCU usually automatically take over and switches everything to HCU when a disc is inserted.
Hope that’s of help. Works for me.
