Audio Systems: Alpine facotry 6 disc changer, 2002 lincoln ls, laser diode

Question
I have a 2002 lincoln ls with factory indash Alpine 6 disc changer.  It will not play, eject, or load a cd.  You get a cd error message and kicks it to radio.  Any ideas.  Have checked the fuse in the trunk of the car and it is fine.
Thanks

Answer
The laser diode is probably gone.  Or the optical pickup and the digital decoder malfunctioning.  The repair is costly; may be even more costly than purchasing a new changer.

I would suggest you check with

www.crutchfield.com

who has the most comprehensive listing of compatible products around. You may be able to find a replacement model that will plug and play with your existing radio head; if not they can guide you to the right one and the wiring harness or adaptors necessary.

You can also go back to the car dealer who can get you  a replacement - but at a very high price.

is one example.  This one is about $250 or so.

Alpine is pretty good stuff and not cheap.

Hope this helps.
