Audio Systems: Jensen Marine MCD 5110 Overheats, jensen marine, power transistors

Question
my newly installed Jensen MCD 5110 AM/FM/CD marine stereo worked fine for a couple of minutes, and then shut down after getting VERY hot.  Now, the unit will power up, all the controls work, but no sound, and it gets extremely hot.   I've triple-checked the wiring and fuses.

Answer
Disconnect all speakers (at the amp) and see if it still heats up. If so, the audio output power transistors must all be replaced.

If okey when no speakers are connected, connect just one at a time and see what happens.

If speaker connection makes it heat up, disconnect speaker wire at the speaker but leave connected at the amp.

Using this sequence of trial and error you should be able to determine if the problem is in the amp, in the wiring or in one of the speakers.

Too many speakers, wrong impedance and shorted wires are the often cause of overheating.

If you know how, pull the unit out and just bench test it by itself, independent of the marine installation.
