Audio Systems: car stereo, 8 ohm speakers, many cars

Question
I recently bought a stereo for my car and it work fine for the first couple of hours but then it started to switch of when i got to a certain volume. ive tried the stereo in another car and it works fine. i have also tried a friends stereo in my car and that seems to be working fine so do u have any suggestions what the problem could be?

Answer
Without the make and model AND the car it is installed in I cannot give you specific advice.

HOWEVER: The most common cause of the conditions you describe are due to the impedance of the speakers in your auto.  If they are too low for your stereo it will cause overheating and the thermal protection cuts in and shuts the set down.

It can also be due to miswiring; if the speaker lines are mixed up in some way it can place a heavy load on the amplifiers and it will give the same results as above.

Many low cost stereo units require 8 ohm speakers, or at least work best with 8 ohms.  But, many cars come with 4 ohm or less speakers installed.

So, if you check these things out I suspect you will find the cause and be able to correct for it.
