Audio Systems: aftermarket installation problems, chevy camaro, output transistors

Question
HI Cleggsan,

I have installed an aftermarket head unit into a  '94 Chevy Camaro (Replacing The BOSE) I used a harness adapter, soldered my connections, etc.  The head unit powers on perfectly, yet I hear absolutely no sound.  What could Cause This?

                                   Thnx In Advance,
                                    Shawn.

Answer
Are you using a self contained unit with built in amplifiers or a separate power amp?

And are you sure the power amp is coming ON?  Does it have 12v applied?

And, have you check the wiring from the amp outputs to make sure you are connected to the speakers?

Did you use the correct harness adapter?  Actually, before wiring in a harnass you should check it to make sure it connects properly.   You can use an ohmmeter (VOM at Walmart is $9.83 and is perfect for car work).   That is my recommendation.

If you find it is wired correctly and the speakers are connected as the should be to the outputs of the amplifier and it is is still dead you have, either, no power to the amps OR the amps output transistors are blown (which is usually caused by miswiring that places shorts on the outputs).

So, if you need more help, send me the head unit make and model and the harness you are using and where you got it; that way I can check it out for you.
