I believe the mitsubishi galant is available with an "upgraded" factory stereo I think made by infinity.  you may see the infinity logo somewhere.  There is an amplifier somewhere in your car that has probably gone bad or blown a fuse.
Do you see the infinity or possibly the bose logo anywhere?

Hmm I don't know if there would be an external amp unless it was from one of those companys. The amp will be very hard to find since it just looks like all the other "boxes with wires" in your car. You can't tell a computer box from an amp box from a box that controlls the airbags too easily.  This is going to sound dumb but when it goes out does banging on the dash or the cd player or going over a bump make it come back?
So just to verify the cd "time" keeps counting as if its playing but the sound stops?  Looks like I'm going to need to do some research for you. ill get back to you.

Answer
Ok I've uncovered a few things for you.  your car is definatly available with a 6 speaker infinity system with a claimed 270 watts of power.  this much power cant really be made in the cd player so it must have an amp somewhere.  Does your car have a 6 disk changer in the dash or just a single disk becuase I believe this is a sign that it has the upgraded system.  There's also a link of a company that makes wireing harnesses to integrate with the infinity amp and lists your car as a compatible model so there's definatly a good chance this is the problem. See here:
http://www.metraonline.com/downloads/pdf/TurboWire/INST70-7003.pdf
This may be an option for you, if they make and sell the harness to use an after market amp you could get that and a new amp or maybe they'd be able to tell you where the amp is (if you sound like you're going to buy the adapter) and you can check the wires on it, maybe they're just loose.
If not, unfortunatly this isnt an easy fix.  I cant find much info online and in general, these factory systems are very proprietary and usually require the entire thing to get changed out.  Many bose systems only work together, in other words, the bose cd player only works well with the bose amp and even the bose speakers. so gutting the whole thing and running new wires are the recomended course of action.  I'd be happy to help you more on this even though its not what you wanted to hear.  If you are willing to rip it all out, buy a new cd player and some new speakers and run new wires I'd be happy to help.  just send me a private message with your email address so we can chat more freqently.
Alternatively please feel free to ask some of the other experts on this forum.
Good luck!
