Audio Systems: Toyota Landcruiser, New car stereo installation, car stereo installation, stereo head unit

Question
Hello, and thanks for your help
I have a 1995 Toyota Landcruiser, and I bought a new stereo head unit (Pioneer) for it, mostly because the stock cd player has been spazzing out intermittenly for the last couple of months and two of the light displays have just gone out.  I bought a harness, made the right connections  (color coated, fairly straight forward) and plugged in the antenna jack and the harness.  I blew a fuse the first time I went to put it in, because I left the car on.  I replaced the fuse, which controlled the cigarette lighter.  But now I  can't get the stereo to turn on, and also the time display is off now.  I checked all the fuses and only the cigarette one was blown.  Now I fixed it, but I can't even turn on my new stereo, Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
I hope the unit has not been damaged; assuming it hasn't crashed, read on:

Did you use the correct harness?  If the Pioneer headend unit was not specifically designed for your system you must have cable/harness adaptors to make the wiring line up.

You can check with such places as scohse and installdr.com to get further information.....  I like the layout that crutchfield uses, also, to make sure you got compatible equipment.

will get you started.

The only way to know if the wiring harness system you used is correct or not is to get and ohmmeter (you can buy one that is entirely adequate at Walmart for under $10) and check out the wires from the back of the unit to the speakers and to the power lines.  A chore, but it has to be done in  your case because something is entirely wrong.

(Note; the color coding can be dangerous because some colors are not to be matched color for color; depends on the harness you are using).

You can check to see if the unit is getting 12volts when turned on - with the meter.  If not, find out where it stopped.  You can jumper a wire from battery to the unit to check it for ON functionality if necessary, but be careful.

So, you have some homework to do; let me know if you need more after checking things out.
