Audio Systems: speaker placement limits, resistance of the wire, wire gauge

Question
Hello, I would like to place some speakers in another room, about 40 feet away from my components.
Is this possible, are there any limits for wiring the speakers that far away? What about wire gauge?
Thanks

Answer
No, go ahead.  40 feet is not so bad.  Use the bigger gauge wire.  Such as 18 ga power cord zip that you purchase in the hardware store. It will do just fine.

The resistance of the wire is the key factor and the longer you run the wires the higher the resistance; this resistance will cause some loss in the wires, but it is minimal at these short distances.

NOW: If you are a high fidelity purist and don't want to lose even a db of sound and you have very expensive equipment you may want to beef it up. If you have any question about it, tell me the power amplifier make and model and the speaker make and model and I can give you more specific advice.  But for general use, the above advice will apply.

Hope this rests you at ease.
