Audio Systems: Alpine CDM-9821, rear speakers, alpine cdm 9821

Question
I have an Alpine CDM-9821 in my 1993 Honda Civic. It was installed after my car was broken into, along with 4 new speakers, and for a good while it was working quite well. First thing to go was the back speakers. They just decided to, well, not work. Then the cd-player itself just decided to quit working. I put the car stereo face in, and nothing. If I had pushed the face in & up it would come back on for a few, but now that doesn't even work. So, with that in mind, do you have any advice? Thanks!

Answer
Well it sounds like its simply broken but here's a test you can do for the speakers to see if they broke or something in the alpine broke that made them stop working.  First you need to find the wires going to the speaker,  you can either remove the speaker to get to the wires or remove the cd player to get to them (this is the best way). take a new AA or AAA battery and put it on the speaker wires, make sure that it's only on the wires going to the  speaker and that the wires that go from the speaker to the cd player are disconnected, you don’t want the power from the battery going back into the cd player.  You should hear a click from the speaker when you touch the battery onto the leads.  This is a nice trick when installing a cd player and you need to find out which wires go to which speakers, you'll hear each one click as you touch different pairs of wires, identifying each one.  So if there’s no clicks you probably have bad speakers,  if they do click but they didn’t work with the cd player then possibly the wires went bad along the way but more likely the cd player broke.  Its especially suspicious that its the cd player since it's now having other problems.  I doubt there are power problems at the cd player since you say "If I had pushed the face in & up it would come back on for a few, but now that doesn't even work"
Its also slightly possible that the wires going to the rear speakers got "shorted out" against the body by being cut or smashed or worn.  this could blow out the amplifier in the alpine and could've caused it's total failure.  Maybe get a meter to test for grounding of the speaker wires before investing in a new cd player.
Good luck!
