Audio Systems: no volume, channel receivers, bench test

Question
i recently purchased a kenwood kra-5070 am fm stereo receiver. when i plug it in everything seems to work but i cant turn the volume up or down. there is no sound at all.

Answer
Dear Kyle,

Without knowing your method of purchase, I'll resist the temptation to suggest you've been had. If you know your seller, get your money back.

The lack of any sound at all indicates a serious problem, which could be anything from the output power to the speakers, signal chain breakdown from any sound source to the power amplifier, or perhaps simply a loose wire in the volume control. You won't know what until you take it in to a qualified repair service for a check-up and bench test. This is going to be expensive, perhaps as much as, if not more than, what you paid for the unit.

The KRA5070 was manufactured in 1995. It's a pretty basic 2-channel stereo receiver with a rated power output of 100 watts per channel RMS. You can get equivalent capabilities from a number of 2- and multi-channel receivers on the market today (Sony, Denon, Onkyo all make acceptable products) for US$200 or less. I suggest you take a look at what's new *and comes with a warranty*.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
