I have a Toshiba TV/DVD/VCR combo model MW27H62. I also have a Presidian DVD Recorder Model PDR-3222. I am looking at old vcr tapes of my family and would like to convert them to CD/DVD. I ask several Radio Shack Tec. and they are not sure how or if I can connect this DVD recorder. They said because the Toshiba has no out-put connections I would need to buy another VCR? Any response appreciated.

Dear Ray,

If any device does not have a signal output, which seems to be the case with your combo unit, how are you going to record it? If there is no output on the Toshiba combo unit, then I agree with the RS techs. The good news is that VCRs are fast going out of fashion, that even the most sophisticated models rarely cost more than US$100.

Kindest regards,

Kevin

Answer
Dear Ray,

Theoretically--I think--that should work. It won't hurt anything to try. However, there may be a simpler way.

A VCR should have ANTENNA IN/ANTENNA OUT coaxial connections on the rear panel. This is because that's how VCRs operate: when you insert a tape to play, it interrupts the normal feed to your TV's ANTENNA connection. Connect your VCR in this fashion. Doesn't matter if your coaxial input is cable, satellite, or a roof antenna. Connect the audio and video output of your VCR to an audio and video input on your DVD recorder. Theoretically, when you play a VHS tape, and set your DVD recorder to RECORD, your DVD recorder will capture the output from the VCR. At the same time you'll be able to watch what's on the VHS tape because the antenna feed will be going to your TV.

I haven't taken the plunge into VCR/DVD recording yet, but that's the kind of set-up I'd try first. Let me know if it works for you.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
