Audio Systems: Layers of music missing on my home stereo system., sony cdp cx 355, home stereo system

Question
Hi Kevin,

I have a question I hope you can answer. I have a home stereo system that consists of the following components that are relevant.

Sony CDP-CX 355
JBL G300 Speakers
Sony STR-D615 Receiver

The speakers and receiver are much older than the CD player. Here is what is happening. Layers of music are missing or sound very distant. Van Halen's guitar licks suffer the most here. What component of my system do you think I need to look at to find the source of the problem?

Thanks you very much for your time,
Ryan Jones

Answer
Dear Ryan,

The best way to approach this is to isolate each component. This will take bit of time and effort. First, you'll need to partner with a buddy who has more or less the same type of components--or a couple of buddies with one or more. Play a CD you know very well, say, one of Van Halen's, on your bud's rig. If it sounds as if you expect, then you start replacing your components with his until your sound improves; that is, the CD sounds on your rig as you would expect it to.

Start with the speakers, the most obvious culprit. Remove yours; install his. Do you hear a difference? Is the difference, like, profound? Bingo. It's your speakers. (Which would be my first guess anyhow; if you've got guitar solo issues, it sounds like a blown tweeter, something you might expect if you play a lot of Van Halen very loudly.)

If it's not the speakers, put your speakers back in and swap out the CD player. Do this until you've found the sound improvement you expect when you've replaced a specific component.

Sadly, if the problem's with either the CD player or the receiver (which I doubt), you'll need to have them tested by a qualified repair service; tho' I wouldn't bother with the CD player. Just go get a cheap DVD player: the electronics are better (more current sound reproduction specifications), and when it breaks, you just buy another one.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
