Audio Systems: DVD FROM EUROPE, system committee, television system

Question
I HAVE A DVD WE GOT IN ENGLAND IT WILL NOT PLAY ON MY DVD PLAYER IS THERE ANY THING I CAN GET SO IT WILL. THANKS

Answer
Dear Chip,

DVDs are regionally encoded, so something bought in the UK with the code "2" will not play on US DVD players. (The code is found in a box on the back of the case. The letters NTSC--National Television System Committee--appear below the number.) Further, European discs have a subcoding: D1 means UK only; D4 means no boundaries. You can have conventional players modified to play European discs, but it's probably cheaper to buy a disc that's US-compatible. Just hope it wasn't the collector's edition of "Lord of the Rings".

Kindest regards,

Kevin
