Audio Systems: Stereo Repair, klh model, page sez

Question
Hello Kevin,
Do you know of any (known) problems with the KLH model r-5100 surround (AV) receiver. The signal from the right front channel is audibly distorted as if a speaker were blown. I have ruled out the speaker, wire, patch cords, and have used different inputs, including the tuner.
When there is no signal - no noise. The signal itself sounds distorted. I do have some electronic background so a technical answer is ok. Thank you in advance.    Mike.

Answer
Dear Mike,

Well, as my bio page sez, I'm not a technician, so you won't be getting a technical response.

I would check user blogs and bulletin boards for problems and perhaps complaints similar to yours with the same make and model--just Google "KLH R-5100" and they'll turn up.

Have you switched the speakers? You don't say so, but I assume you have. It's the first test when you lose the signal in one speaker: is it the speaker or the box?

Audible distortion in one channel can be caused by any number of things: bad parts (transistor or capacitor), faulty wiring, and dust (a dirty component will misbehave as if it's gone bad). If the unit's relatively clean, and you can find any loose wires under the hood, I'd have it bench tested by a qualified repair technician.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
