Audio Systems: late 80s pioneer car stereo, pioneer car stereo, ford capri

Question
helo,my mate has given me a pioneer car stereo that he took out of a car in 1989 which has sat in his garage ever since. No stickers on stereo and amp says GM-40.It worked when he took it out but i have wired it up in my garage to test it straight off a car battery and there is hiss from speakers(it only runs through its matching amp through din plug/no other wires off stereo) and i have the lid off stereo but the tape drive cogs? - (the two small gears that go through the tape)do not spin so the tape wont play. There is a wirring noise from inside the unit and wondered if i take it apart am i likely to find a sheared gear/cog or will there be a rubber band broken? I replaced the rubber band that runs between the two cogs you see when you take the lid off but thats the limit to my car stereo experience. I figure that there wont be rubber bands underneath but gears instead but i dont know how car stereos work anyway because i have never took one apart.I know its an old stereo but it would suit my 1972 ford capri because of its styling(too old to get stolen but modern enough to sound good)
Please excuse my lack of proper terminology
MANY THANKS IF YOU REPLY... Alan

Answer
Hi Alan!
Usually whe you store a radio like this (or any other similar equipement)the humidity and temperature changes makes the lubricants to dry and the rubbers to decay and melt like chewing gum under the sun, maybe your radio got stuck in "TAPE" position and hence the hiss (preamp noise). What you should do if you like to adventure is dissasemble the tape mechanism and clean all the pulleys with a cotton swab soaked in laquer-thinner and later install new bands (you should have one small that drives the loading mechanism. The mos challenging part will be to find the appropiate size for the band if nothing is left from the old one, but an easy trick is to use a string to measure it, and don't be afraid to disassemble, just remember from where you remove anything or take notes if you have bad memory like me! And the most important... Have fun!!!
