Audio Systems: Radio/cass unit wont play 90% of the time, toyota corolla, radio power

Question
I just bought a 1990 Toyota Corolla with a stock AM/FM Cass. Most of the time when the radio power switch is pushed, the stereo makes a weird noise and then shuts itself off and then tries to power up only to repeat the same deal over and over. Once in a while, it turns on and plays normally. P.S. If I try to turn it on at a very low volume setting, it will work 50% of the time until I try to increase the volume, and then it squeals and starts to turn on and off. What do you think?

Answer
Hi!
This can be an easy one if you are a little handy, remove your radio from your car, look for the vol.control, spray a small amount of some electronic cleaner-lube into it and play with the control up and down.
Now let it dry (you don't want a flaming car really?)and plugg it back if it doesn't work you'll have to replace the control.
