Audio Systems: VW Bose stereo, vw jetta glx, bose system

Question
I have a 1998 VW Jetta GLX with a Bose stereo
With (I think) 8 speakers.
I am only getting sound out of the rear speakers.
Very very faint out of the front ones (Only if I put fader all the way to front) Is there a seperate amp that powers the front speakers? and if so where is it?
Would that be the cause of no sound to the front?
I even tried a different head unit and that did not help (still no front sound)

Answer
It sure sounds like you are only hearing preamp levels up front.
Bose will likely have the amps attached right to the back of  the speakers.
The fact that both front ones are out may indicate more problems (if they went dead at the same time).
At 8 years old, I would replace the entire system with an aftermarket non-Bose system!
It is easy to damage a Bose system if you do not understand it. They design it this way on purpose, imho.

But to interface to Bose, you'll do best to consult
www.crutchfield.com
They have all the information you could want as to upgrading the existing system/interfacing to it, or replacing it entirely (and for your specific vehicle).
