Audio Systems: Pioneer VSX-451, sony str de598, bench test

Question
I get no sound output from my receiver. The front lights up like normal, all selections illuminate when selected, but no sound. I removed the cover to check the fuses, and i found fuse 1, 3, and 4, which are good. Is there a fuse 2? I don't see one, but i guess it could be hidden.

Please advise.

Joe

Answer
Dear Joe,

From what information I can gather from a number of web sources, this unit was produced ca. 1991-92. I can't find a manual or schematic for it in the public domain. You can probably purchase a manual at www.servicemanuals.com if you're interested, but for what that would cost--and there's no guarantee that it would find Fuse #2--and what a bench test and repair would cost, I'm not sure you wouldn't be throwing good money after bad.

A bench test is likely to cost around US$75.00, which is ordinarily credited toward the final cost of the repair work. For US$200.00 you can get a new Sony STR-DE598, which is usually heavily discounted on the street. I'm not endorsing the 598 (tho' I do have a predecessor that's worked well for 2-3 years), but that's an example of the economics of receivers these days.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
