Audio Systems: Sylvania SST4272 VCR&DVD hookup, vcr player, antenna cable

Question - Ok, I went back over and checked the menu with nothing connected and my choices were picture, channel set, (English)Espanol, V-Chip setup, Caption(T1).  No input choice, so I hooked in the DVD player (unhooked the VCR), checked the menu, and still have the same choices - it's like it didn't see the DVD player (I had it turned on also).

Something I did notice - with just the DVD player hooked in, the TV just has static to it, but when I plugged in the VCR it goes to the blue screen like auxillary screen.  It doesn't do this with the DVD player. Maybe should try another cable? I think they're using the one that came with the DVD player though, and it looks new.

Thanks again!

Hello,

One of the teachers here at school has the Sylvania SST4272 TV and has been using a VCR with it - it's hooked up with a coax/antenna cable. The TV has the yellow, white, red hookups on the front and back of it, so we used this kind of cable to hook a DVD player up also, but could never get any video or audio from the DVD.

The DVD player will also hook up through S-Video, but neither the VCR player or the TV has S-video spot on them to plug in.  I tried also going from the DVD to the VCR player with the yellow, red, white cable, but still couldn't get any audio or video.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks - Cathy

Dear Cathy,

The connections from the DVD player to the yellow/white/red jacks on the TV are correct. Make sure the DVD player is connected and turned on. Then press "MENU" on the remote control and find the item "SOURCE" or "INPUT". The TV will sense that the DVD player is connected and offer it as a viewing option. It may say "VIDEO 1" or "AUXILIARY". Doesn't matter. If you didn't see before and see it now, that's it. Highlight it, press "ENTER" or "OK"--or whatever the MENU tells you to do to affirm your selection. Press "PLAY" on the DVD player and, you should get the DVD player's picture and sound.

Hint: use the MENU button on the remote to see what input options are available before you connect the DVD player. After you've connected the DVD player, you'll see another. That's the DVD player.

BTW, an S-video cable is a pure video cable. No sound. Also, connecting the DVD player to the VCR doesn't do anything. Good, creative idea, tho'.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin

Answer
Dear Cheryl,

Hmm. No, the cables are not the issue. Seldom are.

I accessed the SST4272 owner's manual on the Sylvania web site. (See below for how to access this.) On the remote control, there is a button labeled "GAME". The manual describes this button's function as follows: "Press to set the Game mode and external input mode at the same time. Press the GAME button again to exit this mode." This may mean that you need to press this button in order to access something else connected the yellow/white/red inputs. Try it.

If that doesn't work, the static may be a clue. When you play the VCR, does the TV have to be set to either Channel 3 or 4 in order to get the VCR signal? If so, that may also be the case with the DVD player. You see, VCRs are calibrated only to play through either of those channels on a TV. Sylvania may have imbedded the same protocol for an auxiliary signal, such as the DVD player.

Try this. Connect everything as you did before and turn everything on. This is the point where you get the staticky picture, right? Now, start the DVD player by pressing "PLAY". Next, starting with Channel 1, slowly toggle through the channels (use the "UP" arrow on the channel selector on the remote) to see if the DVD player's signal shows up. Be careful with Channels 3 and 4 to linger just a moment to make sure that you may or may not be getting a signal. If you find the DVD player on any one of the channels, that's the answer.

If that doesn't work, then you need to contact Sylvania's manufacturer, Funai Corp., for guidance: www.funai-corp.com and click on "Sylvania Brand" or directly to Funai's Sylvania site www.sylvaniaconsumerelectronics.com. Click on the "Support" link at the top of the page; on the next screen, click on "Owner's Manuals" icon and input the model number in the box on the following screen. The SST4272 manual will pop up in a new window. It's in PDF format, so you'll need Acrobat's PDF reader to read it.

If none of this works, on the same screen as the "Owner's Manuals" icon, there is also a "Customer Support" icon, which offers both telephone and on-line support. They should be able to get everything to work.

Hang in there. I think we're close.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
