Audio Systems: Stereo installation, external amplifier, speaker cone

Question
I have a 95 Chrystler LHS, the stereo that came with it wasn't working correctly and didn't have a display.  I bought a new one and installed it what seemed perfectly, antenea worked, display came on, CD opened and closed.....however...no sound at all, all the wires were hooked properly as far as we could tell (my dad and I) but no sound, can you clue me in as to what we might have missed?

Answer

Most any pro would say... "It just needs a rewire...  and that is about 45.00".

That car may have an (external) amplifier for the factory stereo (sometimes multiple small amps). While I am not 100% certain, this would explain much of your woes. I am not familiar with the LHS, but the speaker wires could be traced to an amp (if it exists) pretty fast if you try.

In any case, the easiest resolve will be to install new speakers AND wires. This way you know there is nothing between the deck and speakers (as there would be if the LHS indeed has an amp). 10 year old speakers are about gone (if not gone already) anyhow.

Here ar a few pointers as to installing them correctly:

SPEAKER WIRE ID (polarity):
Once they are ran, the easiest way will be to use a 9v battery to 'pop' the speakers (only long enough to see whether they go IN or OUT of their frames) to see which lead is positive.

Using electrical tape, attach some wires of different lengths to a 9vdc battery so that it will not drain when not in use.

Now..  get into a position where you (or an assistant) can see either the back of [or the front of] the speaker being tested.

*Tap the extended battery leads to the speaker (for 1/4 sec or less) and watch the speaker.
During this test, a functioning speaker should move one way, then return to its idle position.

If the speaker cone jumped OUT of the frame (towards interior of vehicle)the POSITIVE lead on the battery is indeed hooked to the positive for the speaker.  Viola!

If the speaker moved IN towards the interior, the NEGATIVE battery wire is indeed hooked to the positive side of the speaker.

Use bellcap crimp connectors to attach all the wires.

Simple, if you follow the instructions :)

*If you cannot do these tasks as specified, you should consult a local professional.
