Audio Systems: Question about a car receiver, kenwood krc, kenwood kdc

Question
I'm sorry if this is not your field of expertise, but when I searched for car electronics help this site came up.   I bought a used Kenwood KDC 9017 online to replace my Kenwood KRC 509.  The display on mine went out and I think the preouts in the back are messed up because the sound skips around and goes on and off.  When I unplugged mine and plugged up the replacement there was no power on the display and holding down any of the buttons did nothing.  The only thing that happened was I heard my cd changer loading.  I've looked at a couple of websites and it said it could be a security feature from the unit not being powered up for a period of time.  If that's the case, how do I power it up.  I'm thinking about just taking it to the shop.  It didn't come with it's wiring harness, but my current harness fits it perfectly.  Can you recommend anything?  Just wanted some options before I invested in it.
Thanks

Craig

Answer
only thing i can even begin to suggest is letting a servicer look at it. there's probably a specific key sequence or it still could be a harness problem. just because it looks the same, there could be a minor difference in the wiring, causing your problem. can't cost but so much to let someone check it out. there's also the possibility it's the cd mechanisim not being able to finish it's powerup checkout, causing electronics to just shut down. good luck....
