Audio Systems: amplifier not playing cds, broken fuse, bench test

Question
hi MR. East my problem is rather simple id say.  I portable dvd player i plug into an amp to play cds. its been working for months but finally something broke.  the amp is hooked up to six speakers in the house and not one plays. the cd connection is good, its just not picking up the speakers.  i tried everything and every combo. i think its a fuse problem but not sure. maybe it was a bad choice in music my friends played to send my amp over the edge.

Answer
Dear Dylan,

I'm sorry, but your question is not clear. Is it your receiver or your DVD player that's stopped functioning? If it's the DVD player, junk it and get a new one. They're plenty cheap.

If it's the receiver, consult the user's manual for the location of user-servicable fuses and check all of those. If one is broken, replace it with a fuse of the same value. If the fuses are intact or replacing a broken fuse doesn't solve the problem, it could really be anywhere. I suggest taking it in to a qualified repair service for a bench test. This will cost you a nominal fee (usually 1/2 hour's labor--which can usually be applied to the final repair bill), and will tell you very quickly what's broken and if it's worth repairing.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
