Answer
Dear Rob,

What gauge speaker wire are you using? Although occurences of this are rare, sometimes if you use a very small gauge wire (20 or 22 AWG), it has insufficient capacity to deal with both the signal and the minute amount of heat generated by the signal transfer. I recommend at a minimum 16AWG wire for home theater applications, preferably 14AWG. You can compare all of these at any Radio Shack.

You may also have misconnected the speaker leads. Make sure that the "red/+" leads are connected to "red/+" terminals and "black/-" leads to "black/-" terminals.

If the problem persists, I suggest contacting Yamaha or your dealer for assistance.

Good luck! And thanks for choosing allexperts.com.

Kindest regards,
