Audio Systems: Problem w/ Infinity system in 2001 300M, infinity system, graphic equalizer

Question
I have a 2001 Chrysler 300M with a manufacturer installed Infinity AM/FM stereo,w/graphic equalizer, cassette & CD player. When I play the radio the display is either jumbled or it disappears. If the display appears to be working then my speakers cut in and out. Also if the speakers are cutting in and out I cant do anything - like adjust the volume, change the station or even change the mode. The same thing occurs when I attempt to play tapes and cd's.I took it to an audio shop to have it looked at and was told that the power source needed to be repaired. They sent it out and had whatever repair done but I still have the same problem. What could possibly be wrong with it? Or could there be a problem with the wiring that is causing the system to malfuntion? If by chance the wiring is not the problem, I would like to have it repaired as oppossed to replacing the system because I have been told that if I replace the entire system I will not be able to use my steering wheel controls for the new system. Is this true? Is there anything that can be done to fix it or does it make more sense to just replace the entire audio system with something new?

Answer
Hi Dottie,

it is possible that the wiring could be at fault but if the shop you took the car too is a fairly reputable place they should have checked the wiring and eliminated it as a cause, most likly it is just the infinity head unit that simply needs to be replaced.. now whoever told you the steering wheel controls wouldnt be of use after a replacement was somewhat true.. if you use an aftermarket head unit to go back in the car you will have to purchase and extra wiring adapter to maintain the steering wheel controls, you can check on the price by giving a quick call to your local radio shack or circuit city and explain what you are looking for, now if you dont buy the extra adapter for an aftermarket system the steering controls will no longer work. But you can opt to buy back an original head unit just like yours that would require no special harness's, but be warned OEM replacements are extremely expensive, so the best way is to go talk to some guys at a circuit city or other quality audio shop let them help you pick out a unit that does what you want and get the harness to retain your steering controls.. hope this helps you out if you need anything else just let me know

thanks
