Audio Systems: Ford Radio stopped working, fm stereo radio, ford radio

Question
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer with a basic factory installed AM/FM stereo radio w/cassette player.  All of a sudden it decides not to work one day.  I get no sound.  No radio or cassette but all the buttons, lights and on off button and clock work.   When I turn the car on, I get about a 1/2 second of sound through the speakers and that's it.  Have any idea what is causing this.  Thanks for your assistance.

Answer

Brenda,
A ten year old factory radio would very likely be in need of replacement/upgrade at this point.
I will not go in the many possible reasons (much less explain each 'why'), but it would be a good time to coinsider a new audio system. Vibrations and/or other normal wear and tear are likely the problem. I will mention that a new aftermarket one would probably be much more durable than the factory one. Additionally, it would then have at least a one year warranty. Any reputable install shop will gaurantee their re-wiring work for the life of the vehicle.
