Audio Systems: Car stereo displays E - 01, 2000 mitsubishi mirage, mitsubishi mirage

Question
I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage with the factory model cd player in it. For 2 years now, whenever I put in a cd the screen will display "E - 01" and then proceed to spew out my cd (regardless if it's a burned cd or not). Occasionally, and I mean once every 6 months, I can get it to play a cd, but it's fickle and will garble the song until it resorts to "E - 01" again. Do you happen to know what E - 01 means? Is it a problem that is easy (and when I say "easy" I mean "cheap") to fix or should I just get a whole new system?

Answer
You waited two years to come here and tell me twice in one day??  hee
I can only recieve two qestions every 24 hours so please be careful next time since you used two slots that others may need. Asking multiple times will not get me to the PC any sooner :)

Ok...The proverbial 'Cd error code'.

I do not know the code offhand.
I could guess that it is laser/TOC related (a read error), though it could be an alighment problem
The best fix is preventive maintenance.
If you wait too long to do the preventive, it can make the unit a paper wieght as to cd play.

If you have tried a cd cleaning system (I suggest Allsop) and it still does this, you will likely need a new unit, as they are cheaper to replace than to repair (you have to pay for removal and reinstallaion either way).
In any case, use a preventive cleaner more often to keep the unit clean.

I might also add trying your local diamond star dealer for information on the codes. The codes might be in the owners manual kit and the Mitsu Dealer would be the place to start.
