Audio Systems: Speaker Switch Question, electrical switches, speaker switch

Question
I have a 6 speaker surround sound system.  I ran one of the speakers to another room so that I can listen to music in this other room.

It's wired directly to the player and i was wondering how i can hook up a switch to turn ONLY this speaker on and off?  Can you give me a few ideas how I can wire in a switch so that I can turn this speaker on and off?

What do I need to do this?  Please reply, thanks!

Answer
Dear Jeff,

The easiest way to do what you want is simply to insert a switch into the wire itself--a lamp switch that is attached to the cord is a good example of this. There are many kinds of electrical switches (toggle, rocker, push button, and so on). I suggest you take a look at them and choose the one that will best suit how your "other room" speaker's wire is run from the receiver.

A great selection is at www.radioshack.com. Select the "Parts, Tools, and Wire" option and under the "Component Parts" heading select "Switches". You'll be amazed at the selection. No, I don't have a recommendation re one switch over another. A good switch is a good switch; i.e., it does what you want it to. BTW, you may have to solder a wire or two. Radio Shack also sells very modestly priced soldering kits.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
