Audio Systems: Car Stereo - Water Damage to speakers (?), crackling sound, infinity system

Question
Hello

I have 2001 Mitsu Eclipse.  The car has a factory installed standard Infinity system with CD player.

Last night the floor on the passenger side (front and back) was flooded with rainwater (less than 1/4 inch).  The left side of the car was completely dry, however.

I left the moonroof open and when I stuck the key in the ignition (to close it), the speakers (esp. the one(s) in the back) started making the crackling sound.  The sound continued even afer I took the key out.

(BTW I am not 100% that all the water came from above, bec. the water covered just half the car floor)

This morning the crackling sound was gone - but only the front-right-low & high speakers are actually emitting sound.  Seems that the other speakers are dead.  Though the radio and CD functions work fine.

Nothing else seems to be wrong with the car mechanically.

Do you have any opinion on what the problem might be? And what would it take to fix it?

thanks a lot in advance
Kirill.

Answer

Well water is obviously the root of the problem. As to what shorted and broke...I am not sure where, as I have not worked on one of those directly, but that Infinity system should have external power amplifier(s) installed and they could be under the seats or console :(
You are going to need to get it looked at by a pro. You may end up only needing the power amps replaced/upgraded. This could also be another type of component (not the power amp) that is mounted under the seats for the stereo system.

The only advise I could give outside of that is what not to do in the future.

You really need to not power it up wet.. I am 99.99% sure that is what hurt it. If it had been allowed to dry completely before powering it up, it likely would not have shorted.

Good luck and thanks for the question.
