Audio Systems: External speakers and lcd tv, line level signals, sharp lc

Hi Kevin,

We have a Directv satellite connection(via a splitter) to a Sharp(LC-20S1U) 20" lcd tv in the LR and a 15" Sharp(LC-15S1U) lcd tv in the BR. I would like to attach external speakers to tv in the BR. Are there speakers that I can attach from the tv's Audio out RCA connections without going through a receiver?

Dear Bob,

Unfortunately, the audio outs on TVs are only line level signals. They need to go to an amplifier to (guess what?) get amplified into something that can be heard through a loudspeaker. So, yes you need a receiver.

The good news is that you can get excellent A/V receivers at very reasonable prices. Sony makes a $200 model (STR-DE598) which performs very, very well.
