Audio Systems: Problem with AM radio on 94 Escort wagon, spark plug wires, radio chassis

Question
Hi - we just bought a used 1994 Escort Wagon.  I installed a cd player in it before we started driving it (not sure if that's relevant).  I can receive FM radio fine, but when I try to listen to AM radio - it barely works.  To complicate the matter, when I step on the gas - a loud whirring noise occurs and I can't hear the AM station at all.  Any help?

Answer
Dave,
it sounds like the AM radio is picking up engine noise, possibly from the engine computer and the spark plugs. With some special filters and a better antenna you may be able to elimanate most of the noise. Plus grounding the radio chassis to the fire wall along with ground straps on the hood to the fire wall under the hood. You may also want to check out the speacial spark plug wires that have built in resistors that will help with spark plug noise.
