Audio Systems: No radio reception in 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, car stereos, nissan pathfinder

I bought a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder a couple of years ago and the radio has always given solid static - no reception.  The cassette deck works.

I've been meaning to try and fix it for a while.  Could the antenna be disconnected?  I've never worked on car stereos before.  I'm looking for a starting place.

It looks to be the original factory stereo. The antenna rises right on cue when the radio is turned on but yields only static.

Most likely the antenna or cable may be defective. You can try purchasing a cheapo antenna from a local store and pull out the stereo to plug in the test antenna to see if the radio will now receive stations. If you now receive radio stations the original antenna and/or cable may be defective, or the wire/cable could be unplugged from the base of the antenna.
