Audio Systems: universal power antenna installation, toyota land cruiser, power antenna

Question
Hello,
We have a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser that recently had the factory-installed power antenna die. Because we refuse to pay over $500 for the installation of a new Toyota antenna, we instead purchased the Metra CK-PW22 (PW-N) power antenna on the recommendation of the local Toyota tech but after two evenings spent very carefully following the Metra installation instructions and repeatedly taking it all apart to start over again, we still can't get it to work.  Are we doing something wrong?  Are further parts needed?  We've got 5 wires coming from the car and only two from the universal antenna and none of the wires match any of the color-coded information provided by Toyota or Metra.  Please email with any further information/ recommendations that would allow us to complete this replacement antenna install and get our Cruiser back in tip-top shape.

Thank you in advance.

Answer
Marc,
The new antenna uses the mounting hardware as the ground connection. One wire on the new antenna is for up and the second wire is for down. A 12 volt test lamp is a good tool to have when testing for 12 volts. To connect the new antenna and make it work correctly, simply locate which wire in the 5 wire connector that will go to 12 volts when you turn the stereo on. Once you locate this wire, connect it to the wire that makes the antenna go up. Next, turn off the stereo(key still on) and use the test lamp to see what wire goes to 12 volts when the stereo is turned off and connect this to the wire from the antenna that makes the antenna go down.
