Audio Systems: Amp with Speakers, ohm load, watt rms

Question
Ok, I have a 97 Mistu Galant, and I was just wodnering if a JL e2150 amp would be a good choice to power my 2 new Alpine SPS-690A rear speakers. Also which 4 channel amp would be a good choice if I wanted to amp my fronts (SPS-100A) as well.

Also I see high RMS numbers on amps, but my rears are only 50 RMS peak. Can I still use these high RMS amps or would it endanger my speakers.

Answer
George K.,
I've done some research, and the JL e2150 that you have would work great with the Alpine SPS-690A speakers. However, you are right, the speakers do have a 50 watt RMS nominal power rating. In order for you to use the e2150 with the speakers and not endanger them would be to have the speakers wired as a 4-ohm load. The amp can provide 45 watts @ 4 ohms on each channel, so if each speaker was wired to present a 4-ohm load, the speakers wouldn't be in danger. You could still run the 75 watts/channel to each speaker if you wanted to. The nominal RMS rating is just that - nominal. It doesn't mean you can't run more.

A 4 channel amplifier would work very well with all the speakers you mentioned. A 4 channel 200 watt amp @ 50 watts per channel would be great. It'd be a bit more power than the the SPS-100A's should have normally, but their peak power rating is much higher than their nominal RMS rating. I don't think you'd be endangering them. Anyway, I hope I've answered your questions. If you have any more please let me know.

Best Of Luck,
Alan
