Audio Systems: speakers, watts rms, watt speakers

Question
i just bought a new jvc kd-g310 at best buy and he recommened that i get speaker savers for my front speakers, i recently replaced my front speakers they are pyle and have 300 watt out put and my cd player is 50x4. the guy said putting in a system like this is like tripling the power and it could harm the speakers. do you think he is just trying to make money or should i get the speaker savers. Thaks for all the help!!

Answer
Nate,
As long as the power output of the stereo is much lower than the power rating of the speakers you won't need the protector units. Being that the stereo has a power output rating of 50 watts max per channel into 4 speakers ( about 18 watts RMS/average into each channel) I beleive that your 300 watt speakers are over rated for your stereo. The speakers will work, however your stereo simply doesn't have enough power output to drive the speakers correctly. Speakers rated at 100 watts max will be better suited for your stereo, unless you plan to upgrade to a power amp in the future to drive the 300 watt speakers.
