Audio Systems: Factory CD player, spindle motor, chevy silverado

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado. The factory stereo is still in it but the CD player does not work. I bought it this way. When I put a CD in, it makes a whinning noise then spits the cd back out and displays "ERROR" on the face of the deck. Help!!!

two of the most likely causes are as follows, a very dirty/dusty or cigarette smoke on the lens of the laser pick up assembly and second, a weak laser assembly. If the lens is very dirty a CD cleaner disc won't work because the laser has to SEE the disc before the spindle motor will be given the on command. You may have to do a manual cleaning of the lens in the pick up unit.
