Audio Systems: humming-sounds like a short, center channel speaker, dust bunnies

Question
Hi
Just replaced all the speaker wire on my surround sound, all at the same length. Now there is an annoying  humming buzzing noise coming out of the speakers. I have checked all connections. I am in the process of taking it all apart and starting over. Got any ideas? The TV Speakers are fine, all others are not. Could it be a dusty connection?
Thanks!
Rick

Answer
Dear Rick,

First, the length of speaker has little or nothing to do with performance unless you're using 18AWG gauge or smaller for runs of over 100'.

Second, you changed from what kind of speaker wire to what? Why? What's the gauge (AWG rating) of each?

When you say "(t)he TV speakers are fine", do you mean the front channel speakers in a surround sound array, or the TV's built in speakers?

Are you sure you connected POS/+ to POS/+ and NEG/- to NEG/- everywhere?

If the hum/buzz is coming from more than one speaker, and unless you left all the connections filthy in the process of switching out the wire, I doubt that dust bunnies are the culprit.

Have you tried switching speakers out--like exchanging the left surround for the right surround? If so, what happened?

Does the hum also come from the center channel speaker?

What kind of terminators are you using? Banana plugs, spade lugs, pins, bare wire?

Sorry for all the probes, but hums/buzzes are damnable things, and I'm trying to eliminate some obvious problems.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
