Audio Systems: Can I put TV speaker(s) in my kitchen?, home theater receiver, wireless speakers

Question
When I'm in my apartment's kitchen, I can't hear what they're saying on my cable-TV in the living room. (Samsung 25" stereo TV bought in 2001.)
Is there an inexpensive way I can put a speaker or 2 on my kitchen counter, either with wires or wirelessly?

Answer
Dear Dave,

It depends on what you mean by "inexpensive"--all things, especially price, are relative in the audio world.

If your TV has audio outputs (not likely, but maybe), you could try to connect a couple of powered, wireless speakers into them. You'd need to connect a wireless transmitter to the TV's audio outputs and plug the powered speakers into an outlet in your kitchen. It might work. Trouble is that TV audio outputs are notoriously low powered, and I doubt you'd get anything close to appreciable volume. But, like I said, you can try. At the very worst you have wireless speakers and a transmitter.

The second option is to run your cable (box) through your VCR; run the VCR's audio outputs to a stereo/home theater receiver; and connect the wireless transmitter to the receiver. That way your signal is coming directly from the cable (because the VCR's input and output really just pass through the cable signal) and will be much stronger.

If you don't have a VCR, then I hope you have a cable box with audio outputs (some do, some don't), which you could then direct to a receiver, and so on.

If your TV doesn't have audio outputs, then you'll need to go the receiver/VCR/wireless speaker route.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
