Audio Systems: Power Problems with Kenwood KMDX-92, car amplifiers, friends head

Question
Thank you for the quick response. I started looking at it and came across something weird. Every now and then when i disconnect the mini disc transport i can hit the source button and the display will show code off and switch to all off with red lights flashing on the bottom of the screen. When i connected the transport back up it would take a minidisc and the screen would show that it was starting to read it and then just eject it back out and say all off with the moon in its snooze mode (a display it makes) but as soon i hit the source again it shuts it all off and then the mini disk transport keeps moving all its parts like it is trying to accpet and eject a mini disc. Is this deck just too far gone to repair or will it be something easy and simple?

Thank you

Hello I have a Kenwood Exceleon KMDX-92 Mini disc mask Head unit dont know the year and has never been repaired yet, It now has a power. Here is the history. It was my friends head unit but his car died one day and needed a jump start once that was done all this player would do is motorize up or down depending on what position it just so happened to be in at the time. He gave it to me and said if you can fix it you can have it since i am a die hard minidisc fan and have been looking for a quality head unit. The fuse in the back is still in tact and never blew at all. A guy on ebay said he could repair it for $60 but i dont want to send it away since i have a friend who is electrically smart with car amplifiers making them more powerful than they were stock and has repaired many headunits for his use or for sale. What is the problem that i am having and where can i find parts for it and how much would it run me?  I know it is a rare head unit since minidisc never really took off like they hoped but i love it and want to keep it.

Travis,
Beware, anyone who says that they can fix your stereo unit for a flat fee of $60 may not be on the level. The first thing that you will need the locate the problem with this unit is the Service manual. The service manual will have the schematic of the unit so you can trace out the fault. The jump start may have damaged something in the power distribution circuits. If you have a 12 volt test lamp, make sure that both 12 sources are OK. The stereo will have one 12 volt hot at all times (yellow wire) and one 12 volt switched with the key on (red wire)

Answer
Travis,
The problem may be due to a surge on the DC power line to the stereo, The surge could have damaged the main control processor. The mini disc player is most likely OK, the player seems like it isn't communicating correctly with the main processor. I have seen similar problems due to faulty voltage regulators that don't put out the correct voltage that is required and this can cause the processor to not run as it should.
