Audio Systems: Toyota radio, sony xplod, toyota paseo

My Financee has a 1996 toyota paseo that was bought with a non factory head unit installed. I was given a much nicer Sony Xplod head from a friend of mine. After trying to switch the wiring harness I was not able to get the new unit to work. I switched, one by one, the wires from the old harnss to the new one, assuming that the hook up would be the same (however, whoever had previously hooked up the old wiring had not used all th wires, which seemed odd to me). It was not and all I got was the new head's power to turn on, but now sound coming out of the speakers. My buddy and I then tried to replicate powering the unit on (after i had un-connected all the wires, foolishly) and we were not able to. we could not figure out any pattern to the wires coming from the vehicle. None/few of them are color matched, while the wires coming from the harness/head are quite logically laid out.  Is the anything you can do to help me? Thank you so much.

You may want to contact your local Toyota dealer and ask the service dept for a print out of the stereo connector and wire assignments. If that doesn't work out you can try streetdreams.com and look for the Toyota wire colors.
