Audio Systems: test a car stereo amplifier, car stereo amplifier, 12 volt battery

Question
Is there any way to test a car stereo equilzer/Amp.  I was given an expensive one, can I test it with a voltmeter or someway before I pull the car stereo to hook it up. It is a non name brand inexpensive unit, but would probably serve my purpose.

You can test the amp if you have a 12 volt battery on your work bench to hook the amp to for testing. You will need a couple of speakers and some source for audio such as a portable stereo with audio output jacks that you can use an adapter to send the audio from the stereo into the power amp.
