ive had the same problem with 3 different stock ford stereos. this ones model # is E6DF-14A459-C

it is a stock 87 radio that the display doesnt light up. lots of static, buttons dont function, and stations come in filled with static and changes by itself. buttons dont respond expect for volume, balance, bass and treble knobs. tried to replace the radio with another ford one and had the EXACT same problem

It sounds like you need to have your stereos looked at by an experienced repair shop. I repair many of these older Ford stereos and without actually seeing the stereo it would be hard to pinpoint an exact cause of the problem. I can say that on some of these stereos the front keypad and contacts will fail and can cause all kinds of problems such as, volume not working at all or going up and down by itself, changing stations by itself etc.
