Hi Tom;
i installed a newer model Kenwood cassett deck in a 2000 international semi truck. now the problem is that when i installed it the wiring for it (ie)speaker wires were not coded . so i just installed them by sound  if it worked i hooked them up . recently i notice when i crank the volume up it shuts it self off for a few seconds and the only way it stays on is if i lower the volume . my question is would the wiring have to do with the unit shutting off when i put the volume up . or do you think all the banging and bouncing that the semi goes through would have something to do with it . and is there anyway for me to check what wire is the positive and which one is the negative . thanks for the help

Louie,
Most likely the problem is due to the speaker wires being crossed connected or one may be grounded. On this type of stereo you cannot have the speaker feeds(+) and the speaker wires(-) crossed connected or the amps in the stereo will become over loaded and shut down/cut off. If you don't have the installation book for the stereo you can go to the Kenwood site and down load the install manual. To ID the wires to the speakers if unmarked you can use a flash light battery and touch it to the speaker wires until you hear a click-click sound. When you hear a click when quickly touching the battery across each speaker wire line, simply mark that wire pair as to the location of the speaker, front, rear, left, right.

Tom;
thanks for the quick responce   i have one other question concerning the speaker wires .The factory wires that in the truck ara all green no color coded not even little marks on them to determine which one is the positve and the negative . there are 4 factory speakers in the truck so by touching the the wires to the flashlight batery ( d cell ) ?  i would be able to tell which side is the positive and which side is the negative on each speaker ?  by the clicking sound ? im thinking it might be easier to rewire the truck ?

Answer
Louie,
After you strip the insulation off each speaker wire about 1/2 inch, take off the speaker grills or covers. When you ID the wire pairs to each speaker by listening to the click, connect the battery across the speaker wire and watch the speaker cone. which ever wire when touched to the positive post on the battery makes the speaker cone move outwards, that wire is the + wire for the speaker. mark that wire with a red marker or red tape and twist the wires together for that speaker wire pair.
