Audio Systems: Toshiba DVD Troubleshooting, toshiba dvd vcr combo, customer service desk

Question
Hi Kevin, thanks for taking the time to review my question.

I've recently bought a Toshiba DVD/VCR Combo, I'm pretty sure it's model # SDV 392.  After only 3 weeks, the volume needs to be constantly adjusted in order to hear the dialogue.  I realize you get what you pay for, but this is ridiculous.  When I phoned Toshiba Canada's Customer Service desk, the lady told me it was the RCA cables that weren't good.  I told her that it functions properly when the VCR is playing, only to realize later that they have separate connexions to the TV.  I really don't think it's the cables, but I'll change them anyway, just in case.  I've already hooked up the DVD with component cables and RCA for audio, so I might try something better for the audio.  Apart from that I'm at a loss, any suggestions; could it be an internal software glitch?  I asked the CSR at Toshiba if they had an upgrade patch I could download (like some other companies), but she said they didn't have a download.  Any suggestions, apart from returning it to Sears and getting a refund?

Answer
Dear Mr. P.,

Oops. I opened the on-line manual to the SD-V392 (missed it during my first pass through Toshiba's web site--sorry), and found that the coxial/optical audio output is for the DVD only. Looks like you need the RCA audio outputs for the VCR section of the unit. If switching the cables doesn't do the job, definitely take it back.

I apologize for the confusion. My bad.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
